If you’re like me, you might be coping with quarantine by indulging in the occasional impulse buy. My guilty pleasure these days is makeup, so I can sit at home practicing new looks and dreaming of the day when I can go out on the town again. But if we’re going to give in to consumerism during these fraught times, the least we can do is be mindful about where we spend our money and try to support small businesses that prioritize ethical practices. Below are a few of my favorite ethical makeup companies that cater to a dark aesthetic:

Black Moon Cosmetics

This is my absolute favorite brand for liquid lipsticks. Their shade Sleepwalker is one of the best black lipsticks on the market, but I’m partial to their dark metallic gray called Castle. They also have tons of other weird, dark, and metallic shades. All of their lipsticks have amazing staying power and are pretty transfer-proof. Beyond the lipsticks, Black Moon Cosmetics has a wide variety of lashes, a line of liquid eyeshadow, and a couple of new eyeshadow palettes. And if your’re overwhelmed by the selection, the website has a bunch of themed bundles and gifts sets. All Black Moon Cosmetics products are certified cruelty free and vegan.

Baby Bat Beauty

I’d seen this brand vending at local goth conventions but had never tried them until last month. I just got a few of their liquid lipsticks, and I’m in love! The dark green shade Medusa is getting added to my list of absolute favorites. Baby Bat Beauty sells much more than just lipsticks, though. They’re best known their loose and pressed glitter and liquid highlighters, and they also sell some bath and body supplies like face masks, cleansers, and lip scrubs. Baby Bat Beauty is certified cruelty free, and almost all of their products are vegan (and clearly labeled as such on the website).

Necromancy Cosmetica

Liquid lipsticks not really your thing? Don’t worry, you can still find great gothy shades in old-fashioned bullet lipstick form at Necromancy Cosmetica. I haven’t tried this brand myself yet, but it has come highly recommended by friends. Their line of creamy matte lipsticks all have excellent names, like Carnal Sin, Morgue, and Witches Brew. They also sell accessories, such as an adorable coffin-shaped lipstick holder, and branded merch. Necromancy Cosmetica is independently owned, produced, and distributed by just two people based out of Puerto Rico. Their products are certified cruelty free and vegan.

Have you tried any of these brands? What other brands do you recommend? Let me know in the comments!
